The Indiana Pacer's Jermaine O'Neal has suggested that racism is the motive behind proposing an age limit for entry into the NBA. I may disagree with the assertion that racism is behind it, but you do have to wonder why really is is that people are so concerned with high schoolers entering the NBA? People aren't concerned when figure skaters drop out of school at the age of 7 to pursue their sport. They aren't concerned when tennis players or golfers stop going to middle school to pursue their education on the links or the courts.

Jermaine O'Neal correctly stated "If I can go to the U.S. army and fight the war at 18, why can't you play basketball for 48 minutes?" So why then do we think that an eighteen year old is not ready for the NBA. A kid can go out and die for his country but not put himself in a position where he can earn millions. Is it racism? No, it is really because we are "so concerned about his college education." Sports writers like to put up this kind of faux concern about the very few kids who declare for the NBA, and then are either not drafted our flop out after a few unsuccessful years. "Well if they had gone to college blah blah blah blah." These kids are pursuing a dream and while yes, they may lose out on that scholarship Louisville or Cincinnati they're still young and still have they're whole lives in front of them. They aren't doomed to failure at this point.

The fact is that the NBA is an incredibly high profile sport and to the same extent so is college basketball. There is a belief (an incorrect belief) that these defecting youngsters are somehow ruining the NCAA. To me it is making things more interesting for college ball. I'm sure if they look hard enough they'll find that the ratings are probably up as well. So let's hope the NBA doesn't screw up this decision and let's hope they keep the draft open to high school kids.

Maybe you wouldn't notice the NBA playing but that is because you DON'T HAVE SHAQ DOMINATING THE PAINT AND LAYING DOWN THE LAW ON ALL WHO ENTER THE LANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heh heh! I have to admit, I've come around on Shaq. He is the beneficiary of my increasing loathing of Kobe Bryant. Also, his episode of "Pimp my House" or whatever it's called was pretty cool. Have you gone to a Heat game yet?
