Rant of NFL contracts

All right, since this is my spot to vent, I'm going to vent. Anquan Boldin is holding out of the Cardinal's mini-camp because he feels that he deserves a new contract. This is two years after he signed his rookie deal. He joins Terrel Owens (one year post-deal) as the poster boys for selfish players who are not willing to work the remaining years of their contract. Jacksonville has had to deal with this same situation and I always shake my head when a team caves into some selfish players demands. So right now you are probably saying to yourself, "Well the team can cut players whenever they want... if a team can cut a player, why can't a player hold out?". Here is the thing though. All of the terms for how players, teams, and the NFL itself handles contracts were worked out through the collective bargaining agreement. The NFL players association agreed to the term that the only gauranteed money was the signing bonus. If players feel that they are getting the short end of the stick, then they shouldn't have signed that agreement in the first place.

Don't get me wrong... I'm not saying that players shouldn't express a desire to get contract extensions if they feel that they are undervalued and are near the END of their current contract. Marcus Stroud is a perfect example. He was at the end of a 4 year deal and indicated that he had no intention of holding out during the season. My issue is when a player has ONE good year (a la Terrel Owens) and decides that the seven million dollar signing bonus they got LAST year isn't enough. Same thing with Anquan. Why don't you wait until you've played more than TWO years before you yap off at the mouth about wanting a new contract. Honor what you agreed to under the collective bargaining agreement. If you don't like it, your chance to change it is coming up in 2007.

Seriously, I would love to see these teams stop caving in. If the player stops performing out of protest, bench them. See what kind of a contract they get when this one expires if they haven't played all year.
