Who would want the Olympics?

Is there anything the French aren't bitter over or angry about? It appears as though the mayor of Paris is upset about London's choice to host the 2012 Olympic games over Paris. Who would want the Olympics these days anyway? Look at Greece... they dumped about half of their national budget into preparing Athens for the 2004 games and look at where it got them! Let's face it, with the amount of money that countries now have to pour into completely redoing the infrastructure of the city for the games, building collosal new venues, and keeping security up to par... why would any president, or prime minister or mayor want to deal with the hassle?

Don't be too upset Paris. While London is busy building their next Millennium Dome, trying desperately to live up to the increased expectations that people have for the games these days, you can kick back and watch the city bury itself under a mountain of unsold Olympic tickets.

Yeah, I agree. I think the only people for whom getting the Olympics could be profitable is a cool, less known city that needs the publicity. For instance, I know the Olympics had a HUGE economic impact on Barcelona, because it was a city still off the tourist and investment map, but all the publicity put it over the top. But London? Who is going to learn something new about London from watching the Olympics?
